This assessment is worth 50% of the overall module mark

 

THE BRIEF/INSTRUCTIONS

 Skills practice Magazine (50%)

Learning outcomes fulfilled by this assessment:

  • identify key skills required of managers in practical environments
  • reflect upon their own skills in the development of their management career

TASK

This magazine should be 7 A4 pages in total consisting of:

a)   Using 1 x A4 page, identify key skills required of managers, using theoretically informed categorizations of skills.Explain and explore which of these skills you currently possess, having developed them in previous experience (voluntary, sport, community, work or study etc.) and how knowledge gained in your degree will help develop those skills towards your future career in management.  

b) Identify 3 management skills covered on the Management skills element of the module (see list from the weekly content) and dedicate 2 x A4 spread to each skill.  This should detail:

  • Definitions and importance of the identified skill
  • Explanations of any key terms, concepts, processes, frameworks, models, tools or techniques relevant to the skill
  • Example(s) of where you have used the skill in your own practice and which aspects you have been successful in.  Please detail what you did, how you did it and why you did it that way/how that was beneficial (using theory).
  • How you feel that this skill will benefit you in your future career

Assessment 2 - Magazine Marking Criteria:

Presentation of magazine (10%) 

Clear presentation through consistent visual/colour theme to magazine which illustrates digital skills in presentation which utilizes columns, graphics, images and/or diagrams to illustrate clear points.  This should be written in concise form, using sections and subheadings rather than essay style.

Management Skills and ‘About me’ insights (20%)

This should be well structured and concise to your developed skills, knowledge and competence so far, which have been developed through work experience, education and/or other scenarios (e.g. Sport, volunteering and community activity).

Theory informed insight (20%)

Use of reliable theory to identify, define and discuss key concepts associated with 3 skills (from those covered on the module).  This should cover definitions, models, frameworks, tools/techniques or key discussions for each skill and should not be purely repetitive of points made in pre-recorded lectures.

Scenario based examples (20%)

Clear illustration of your own practice of those 3 skills through structured scenario specific examples where you have used the skill.All scenarios should be structured using the STAR framework.

Application of theory to skills practice (20%)

Theory should be applied throughout the example to illustrate where actions have been informed by knowledge/understanding.This should illustrate what you have done, how you have done it and why you did it that way underpinned with relevant theories to help explain.  All theory underpinning the examples should be fully referenced to relevant, reliable authors.

Consideration of future careers (10%)

Careers research to identify how these skills might be useful in future jobs/roles in management (or self-employment where appropriate). This should be informed by professional body standards or reliable careers research.

Marking Rubric

The magazine can be produced using Microsoft Powerpoint and converted to a PDF document.  Please ensure that your assessment submission is in the form of a PDF file onto Turnitin. When using Turnitin, ensure that you are using Mozilla Firefox to optimise the speed of submission.  A guidance video on how to develop your magazine is on the Blackboard area and regular sessions on how to create it and monitor your progress on it are built into the scheduled class sessions.

If you do not have practical experience to draw from – the following module activities can be done and used as examples of skill use:

Delegation and Prioritisation task – Borough Bank in-tray exercise – available on Blackboard.Feedback through a model answer (also available on Blackboard) will allow you to reflect on where you were successful in the in-tray exercise.

Problem Solving – Management Consultant for the day – available on Blackboard.  Feedback through a model answer (also available on Blackboard) will allow you to see where your answers were similar to the real consultants.

Decision Making – Situational Decision Making activity – available on Blackboard. Feedback through situation solutions (also available on Blackboard) will allow you to evaluate your decision making skills.

 

PREPARATION FOR THE ASSESSMENT

  • A computer room session to get started on the magazine in week 6.
  • In the Blackboard module materials folder labelled ‘Designing your magazine’, links are provided to LinkedIn learning videos on:

               How to edit powerpoint slides

               How to design different parts of a magazine

  • Two examples of magazines for this topic is available here: Example magazine 1 Example Magazine 2
  • Sessions on relevant theory are pre-recorded and available on Blackboard. At the end of each session there is a short overview of how the material covered in that session can be used for the assessment. Additional reading is also recommended for each topic at the end of each pre-recorded session.
  • There are workshop sessions and 121 meetings throughout the module which will give tips/help with creating the magazine and offer regular opportunity for you to share your work with the tutor to receive feedback.
