Summative Coursework – Reflective Portfolio

There are three tasks as part of this assessment. YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL THREE TASKS. However, there will be a single, overall mark for the portfolio.

There is an overall word limit for the assessment of 3,750 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) but it is your choice how many of those words you put toward each task. However, you are advised to divide the words roughly equally between the three tasks.

The portfolio should be organised clearly into Task 1, Task 2 and Task 3. Task 2 can be sub-divided into numbered entries depending on how many examples you provide. There should be a single bibliography.

Task 1: Essay on Theory: Discuss the aims and values of the criminal justice system by critically applying them to defendant experiences of police, lawyers or courts.

(This task refers to the research-facing part of the module as covered by Fred Cram, Robert Jones and Daniel Newman).

Task 2: Reflection on Skills: Drawing upon at least two practice-facing topics covered on this module, reflect upon your learning experiences on the module with a focus on the development of your skills and of your understanding of criminal justice in practice. You may also draw upon external sources (for example, pro bono, court visits, personal experiences, artistic/cultural representations), in addition to your learning in seminars, lectures, or assessments for this module; however, your primary focus should be on your learning on the module.

(This task refers to the practice-facing part of the module as covered by Nicola Harris and Claire Pickthall).

Task 3: Reflective Conclusion: Reflect upon your learning on the module as a whole. What have you found to be the links, the tensions, and the synergies, between a research-focused approach, and a practice-focused approach, to the study of criminal justice? What have you learnt from this experience, and how can you use your new knowledge?

(This task includes reflecting upon the research- and practice-facing topics and how these have impacted your learning and understanding of the topic).
