Learning outcome 1 Understand safeguarding.

1.1 Explain what is meant by ‘safeguarding’.

The explanation of safeguarding must: show accurate understanding of the meaning of safeguarding, and relate safeguarding to the context of health and social care. Give examples, and include a minimum of 1 traceable reference.

1.2  Explain how safeguarding:

  • keeps individuals safe
  • values individuals needs
  • protects individuals.

Use of reading or use of sources should be shown through a range of relevant referencing. Referencing should be used appropriately to support view or discussion. A minimum of 3 traceable references are recommended.

1.3  Explain how health and social care practitioners can take steps to safeguard themselves.

Provide a detailed explanation of more than one way that health and social care practitioners can safeguard themselves; each way must be clearly different and show understanding of key issues relevant to own safeguarding. A minimum of 3 are recommended. Include an example and a traceable reference per way.

Understand how to safeguard individuals in relation to legislation, policies and procedures.

2.1  Summarise current legislation in relation to safeguarding.

Provide a summary of current legislation in relation to safeguarding such as: Health and Social Care Act 2012, Care Act 2014, and other relevant legislation. Include relevant in-text citations and a minimum of 3 traceable references.

2.2  Describe the relationship between legislation, policy and procedure.

The description must provide evidence of understanding of the relationship between legislation, policy and procedure. Include a minimum of 1 traceable reference.

2.3  Identify policies and procedures in relation to safeguarding.

Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to safeguarding must be shown. Policies and procedures identified must be shown as relevant in the context of safeguarding and not generic to health and social care. Understand factors that may contribute to an individual being vulnerable to harm or abuse.

3.1 Explain factors that may contribute to an individual being vulnerable to harm or abuse.

More than one factor must be explained. The explanation must demonstrate: an understanding of relevant factors, the contribution of these factors to an individual becoming vulnerable to harm or abuse. Include examples. A minimum of 5 factors and 3 traceable references are recommended.

Know signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours that may cause concern. 

4.1 Describe signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours that may cause concern relating to:

  • neglect
  • self-neglect
  • physical abuse
  • emotional abuse
  • sexual abuse
  • domestic abuse
  • financial abuse
  • institutional abuse
  • bullying.

Select five (5) of the types of abuse. For each type of abuse, a correct description of the signs, symptoms, indicators and behaviours which may cause concern must be given. A minimum of 2 traceable references are recommended. The explanation of safeguarding must: show accurate understanding of the meaning of safeguarding, and relate safeguarding to the context of health and social care.

Understand the lines of reporting and responsibility in relation to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of individuals.

5.1 Describe the lines of reporting and responsibility in relation to safeguarding protection and welfare.

More than one aspect of lines of reporting and responsibility must be considered in the description. A minimum of 4 aspects are recommended.

Use of referencing should show evidence of reading or use of sources. 

5.2 Explain the boundaries of confidentiality in relation to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of individuals.

The boundaries of confidentiality must be explained in depth to show: understanding of the boundaries of confidentiality, the application of the boundaries of confidentiality to safeguarding, protection and welfare. Include examples.

Show evidence of wider background reading or use of sources. Referencing supports discussion and analysis.

Wider background reading should be evident or a wide range of sources material should be used. A minimum of 3 traceable references are recommended

Understand the role and responsibilities of the health and social care practitioner in relation to safeguarding individuals. 

6.1  Evaluate the role and responsibilities of the health and social care practitioner in relation to safeguarding individuals.

Evaluate to address the role and responsibilities of the health and social care practitioner from more than one perspective to include:

  • working with the requirements of current legislation (1.1)
  • following policies, procedures and lines of reporting (2.2, 3.1)
  • maintaining own role in relation to others (1.3, 5.2)
  • the extent of roles and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding individuals.

Show evidence of a range of background reading or use of sources used selectively.

Learners should show the ability to consider or explore relevant issues which contribute to the evaluation. An extensive range of background reading or use of sources should be used selectively and cited appropriately. A minimum of 5 traceable references are recommended.
