Description of the assessment
Psychology of Parenting has one assessment component: a written dissemination to a professional audience (3500 words max) – you are required to state your intended audience at the beginning of your submission. This is worth 100% of your module grade and will address the two learning outcomes outlined below:
Learning Outcomes
The module has two learning outcomes.
Learning Outcome One: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding on how psychological theory and research can be applied to parenting.
Learning Outcome Two: Critically evaluate psychological theory and research on how factors associated with diversity may have an impact on the quality of parenting.
You must meet both of these learning outcomes to pass the module.
This assessment involves preparing a written dissemination (e.g., information leaflet, guidance report etc.) to a professional working with parents and families. During the module, you will discuss a range of topics associated to the psychology of parenting.
The assessment requires you to choose one of the topics covered during the module, or a different topic associated with the psychology of parenting, and to disseminate information about that topic to a professional audience who work with parents and families. This assesses learning outcomes 1 and 2 as addressed in the module handbook.
Relationship to Programme Assessment Strategy
Psychology of Parenting is one of the optional modules offered at Level 6, delivered in the Spring term. The themes explored in the module will also have links with other modules you have covered so far in the programme. The assessment will allow you to build and develop your skills at disseminating psychological theory and research to a given professional audience.

Assessment Content
For this module, you will need to complete the following assessment:
A 3500-word written assessment, disseminating a chosen topic to a professional audience (e.g., an information leaflet, report etc.), who works with parents and/or families.
One of the unique aspects of this assessment is the type of assessment – written dissemination. This allows a degree of flexibility to prepare a written dissemination of your choice, on a topic associated with the psychology of parenting, which will be targeted for professionals working with parents and families. The choice and type of written dissemination you choose will depend on the nature of the information you want to portray, and to some degree, the topic associated with the psychology of parenting. Remember, the target audience regardless of the type of written dissemination will be the same – professionals working with parents and families. Below are some examples of different types of written dissemination that you might consider for this assessment:
- Information leaflet
- Guidance report
- Best practices manual
- Workshop handbook
- You may also want to consider other types of written dissemination – if so, you must run your ideas via module tutors.
There will be an opportunity to discuss your ideas with the module tutor in a dedicated taught session.
The focus of this written dissemination will centre on a specific topic associated with the psychology of parenting and will aim to disseminate and provide practical guidance, evidenced-based information, and recommendations to professionals working with parents and families with reference to psychological literature and theory. Further to this, the written dissemination should also evaluate psychological theory and research on how factors associated with diversity may have an impact on the quality of parenting. This will address learning outcomes 1 and 2.
You are required to apply psychological theory and empirical research findings to critically discuss how the selected topic associated with the psychology of parenting can be best understood for professionals working with parents and families.
While it is important to consider that you are not writing to a lay audience (i.e., very little or no prior knowledge on the topic area), you should assume that these professionals do not come from a psychological background. As such it is important you disseminate key psychological terms and concepts in an understandable manner.
The structure and content of the written dissemination will vary depending on the topic selected associated with psychology of parenting and the type of written dissemination. Regardless of the topic or type of dissemination, it is expected all submissions will contain the following content:
- Identify the topic and audience:
- The written dissemination should clearly identify the topic that addresses a specific aspect associated with the psychology of parenting, that would benefit a professional working with parents and families in this area. It is important to make it clear and identify the specific professional audience you are also targeting. In identifying the topic, it is important here you also build a rationale and justification for why this topic has been chosen.
- Literature review:
- The written dissemination should then discuss psychological theory and research in the context of the chosen topic to show how it is applied to psychology of parenting. You want to critically discuss and disseminate key findings in this area to professionals, to address what is currently known about the topic area and identify gaps in the literature. It is also important here to present a balanced view of the literature.
- Factors associated with diversity:
- You also need address how factors associated with diversity in your selected topic may impact on the quality of parenting. For your chosen topic, you need to critically evaluate the theory and research looking at factors associated with diversity. For example, this may include cultural influences, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and other factors associated with diversity. Here you need to explore positive and negative impacts of diversity on your topic associated with psychology of parenting.
- Practical recommendations
- Based on what has been discussed in your written dissemination, you want to provide evidenced-based practical recommendations that professionals can use to implement / guide / or better inform their work and practices. This is also an opportunity to consider policy implications in the context of the topic area more broadly, and specifically consideration on policy development for the needs of diverse families.
You are required to provide a full reference section in APA format at the end for all citations made. The title and references are not included in the total word count, nor is the declaration of your intended professional audience.
In addition to the above content guideline, topic selected, and type of written dissemination, you may also want to consider the format and structure of the written dissemination, and visual elements (e.g., charts, graphs, statistics, pictures etc.).
Assessment Rubric
The assessment rubric on the next page shows the complete criteria of the assessment and how you will be assessed. We will explore the content of the rubric together in one of the taught sessions.
When the assessment is returned you will receive a digital version of the rubric showing how you performed against each criterion. You will also receive written feedback on the strengths of your work and key areas for development. There will be an opportunity to discuss the feedback with the marker.
Submissions in Turnitin and Blackboard.
You must submit your work using your student number to identify yourself, not your name. You must not use your name in the text of the work at any point. When you submit your work in Turnitin you must submit your student number within the assignment document and in the Submission title field in Turnitin. A guide showing how to do this can be found here.
There will be several opportunities to receive support for the assessment throughout the module. The Introduction to the Module session will outline the nature of the assessment and what is involved. There will be dedicated session which will provide assessment support and guidance in terms of structure, content, and guidelines. There will also be an opportunity to discuss ideas for the written dissemination with the module leader in a dedicated assessment Q&A session.
