CASE STUDY : Reko Diq copper-gold project, Pakistan
Press Release DECEMBER 15, 2022 Barrick.com website:-
Massive Reko Diq Project Gets All Clear, Barrick Starts Updating Plans
(All amounts expressed in US dollars)
Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD)(TSX:ABX) said today that it had completed the reconstitution of the Reko Diq project, having received a favorable opinion from the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the required legislation having been passed into law.
One of the largest undeveloped copper-gold projects in the world, Reko Diq is owned 50% by Barrick, 25% by three federal state-owned enterprises, 15% by the Province of Balochistan on a fully funded basis and 10% by the Province of Balochistan on a free carried basis.
Barrick president and chief executive Mark Bristow said the completion of the legal processes was a key step in progressing the development of Reko Diq into a world-class, long-life mine which would
substantially expand the company’s strategically significant copper portfolio and benefit its Pakistani stakeholders for generations to come.
“We are currently updating the project’s 2010 feasibility and 2011 feasibility expansion studies. This should be completed by 2024, with 2028 targeted for first production,” Bristow said.
“With its unique combination of large scale, low strip and good grade, Reko Diq is expected to have a life of at least 40 years. We envisage a truck-and-shovel open pit operation with processing facilities producing a high-quality copper-gold concentrate. We expect it to be constructed in two phases with a combined process capacity of 80 million tonnes per annum.”
Reko Diq will be a major contributor to Pakistan’s economy which is expected to have a
transformative impact on the underdeveloped Balochistan province where, in addition to the
economic benefits it will generate, the mine will also create jobs, promote the growth of a regional economy and invest in development programs. The province’s interest in the mine will be fully
funded, which means that Balochistan will reap the dividends, royalties and other benefits of its 25% shareholding without having to contribute financially to its construction and operation.
“Reko Diq’s ownership structure is a further manifestation of Barrick’s commitment to partnership with its host countries and communities and to sharing the value our operations create fairly with all our stakeholders,” Bristow said.
“We’re making sure that Balochistan and its people will see these benefits quickly. Starting early next year, Barrick will implement a range of social development programs prioritizing the improvement of healthcare, education, vocational training, food security and the provision of potable water. Our investment in these is expected to amount to around $70 million over the feasibility and construction period. In addition, Reko Diq will advance royalties to the government of Balochistan of up to $50
million until commercial production starts.”
During peak construction the project is expected to employ 7,500 people and once in production it will create around 4,000 long-term jobs. As elsewhere in the group, Barrick prioritizes the
employment of local people and host country nationals.
Bristow said Barrick already had the industry`s best gold assets and the addition of Reko Diq would promote its copper portfolio into the world-class league, accelerating the company towards its goal of creating the world`s most valued gold and copper mining business.

Lycopodium favoured by Barrick Gold to deliver feasibility and engineering work at Reko Diq
Perth-based engineering, construction, and asset management company Lycopodium (ASX:LYL) has been selected as a preferred tenderer by Barrick Gold (NYSE:GOLD) to deliver a Feasibility Study and a basic engineering agreement at the Reko Diq Copper-Gold Project in Pakistan.
The $55 million contract is currently being finalised between the parties, with work expected to begin on 22 May 2023. The Feasibility Study is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of
2024, while the basic engineering will start in October 2024 and is set to be complete in the second quarter of 2025.
Lycopodium says the project is expected to be completed in 2 phases. Phase one will be based on a copper concentrator with a processing capacity of 40 million tonnes per annum and associated
infrastructure including onshore port facilities, and a 7,500 person accommodation camp. Phase two will see throughput increased to 80 million tonnes per annum.

The company reports it will coordinate the overall Feasibility Study for both phases, providing the study deliverables to support the No 43-101 technical reports. Basic engineering will only be performed on phase one of the project.
Lycopodium also says it will be responsible for the coordination and interface management of all Barrick engaged sub-consultants providing inputs into the Feasibility Study.
The Reko Diq Copper-Gold Project is considered by the company to be one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world. The project is in the Tethyan Belt in the northwest corner of Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
“This project will unlock one of the largest undeveloped copper assets in the world, and we are extremely proud to be given this opportunity to work with Barrick to bring this exciting and
meaningful project into fruition.”
Commenting on the contract, Lycopodium Managing Director Peter De Leo says: “The construction and operation of the Reko Diq Mine will significantly contribute to Pakistan’s economy, in particular benefiting from the underdeveloped Balochistan province in the creation of jobs and investment in regional development programs. Lycopodium says the award builds on its ‘significant’ copper concentrator experience, with recent projects including Cobré Panama and the Batu Hijau plant expansion in Indonesia. Lycopodium is an ASX-listed engineering, construction, and asset management company that specialises in delivering complex, multidisciplinary projects through to the provision of Feasibility Studies and advisory services. Barrick Gold is a Canadian gold and copper producer with assets across North America, Central America, South America, Africa, and the Middle East. Some of these projects include Reko Diq Copper-Gold, Jabal Sayid, Hemlo, Nevada Gold Mines, Pueblo Viejo, and Lumwana projects.
