Postgraduate Research Methods Assignment 2024/25

Prepare a proposal for your MSc Dissertation based on the guidelines and material available for the course.It should be between 1700 and 1900 words. Deadline is Friday 13th December 2024, 5:00pm. 10 marks deductions for late submission.

If you cannot submit on time, anything more than a week after 13th December 2024, consider applying for ECS (you can do so before or within 48 hours of the deadline on banner, yourselves). This will not affect your marking or academic record, and you get to resubmit in the next term or during resit period.

If you do not submit anything and you have not applied for ECS, you will have to re-attend the module and pay the module fee.

Your proposal should include the following:

  • Cover Page: research title, name, and banner number
  • Title
  • Abstract
  • Introduction
    • Problem Statement
    • Significance
    • Research Question
    • Aims and Objectives
  • Literature Review
    • Methodology (follow marking scheme as guide)
      • Research onion
      • How analysis will be done
        • Activity planning with tasks breakdown and time allocated for each one (full time students have 1 full term to do the MSc Project – Do keep that in mind)
      • Conclusions and Recommendations
      • References (Harvard Style Cite them right) Your work should answer the following: What?Why? How?

The marking criteria/scheme is as follows.

Knowledge and understanding:

  • Research title and Abstract (5) – Topic is clear and connected to your programme. Abstract explains key themes, research designs and intended outcomes of the research/proposal in a one-page summary.
  • Introduction, Research question, Clear Aims and Objectives (15)– Introduction completeness and clarity to the introduction of the organisation/industry/business etc, research background in relation, problem statement, rational for the research and significance of the study being reported. Research Question, Aims and Objectives are focused and fit the specification of the topic and research purpose, providing specific link to relevant literature.
  • Literature Review (10) - is underpinning the question, aims and objectives. Relevant theoretical studies/models and empirical studies, which is based on good mix of literature and includes academic resources of good quality.
  • Cognitive skill (5) - Evidence of original thinking. Critically reflect on the selected literature and discuss accepted knowledge by identifying and outweighing opposite views in the literature.

Knowledge and understanding:

  • Methodology.
    • Research philosophy, Approach, and Design (5) - is presented with a clear structure, applies to the research, and properly justified.
    • Research Strategies/instrument (5) – Description and justification of the selection and application of the selected research strategy/instrument.
    • Data Treatment (10)  Quality and Completeness of description of data collection and analysis methods and the execution: how secondary and primary data (includes sampling and Mention of Ethics requirement) where selected and analysed.

    • Practical Skills
      • Activity planning (10) Timescale is realistic and research process is broken down into a series of steps with how much time needed for each highlighted.

  • The structure of the proposal and justification clear
    • Analysis and discussion of the preliminary (proposal) findings have a connection to the research question and supported by the body of knowledge and critical thinking.
    • Conclusions have a clear connection to the aims and objectives and further research are mentioned.
