Learning outcomes:
- Understand the role, impact, collection and usage of data and how it shapes company strategies.
- Understand and critically evaluate how progress in data storage technologies based on relational database management systems can shape and change business models in the corporate world and society in general.
- Understand and apply appropriate theoretical concepts, tools and techniques to design appropriate data management processes and data models to apply them in business contexts using SQL.
- Critically evaluate different technologies widely used in the market to process data and transform it into knowledge.
- Apply the acquired technical skills to create powerful reports based in the objective analysis of the data sources, combining analytics and visual presentations.
Assessment details: Individual presentation with explanatory notes, 100% (equivalent to 2,500 words)
Referencing: Students are expected to use Harvard Referencing throughout their assignments where required. Please follow the Harvard Referencing Handbook for all your assignments at the ULBS.
Submission Method: Turnitin - Your work will be put through Turnitin. All submissions will be electronically checked for plagiarism and the use of AI software.
You have the option to upload your work ahead of the deadline, more than once. ULBS will be reviewing your last submission only. You can only upload one file. For example if your work contains a word document and power point slides/Excel spreadsheet you will need to copy your slides/spreadsheet into the word document.
Note: Keep in mind that self-plagiarism (when you reuse your own specific wording and ideas from work that you have previously submitted without referencing yourself) is also a form of plagiarism and is not allowed.
As a business analyst you are contracted by an online clothing retail store which is growing exponentially. The store wants you to analyse the key issues faced by the store in relation to the data design management and provide the solutions based on industry analysis and current technologies available to facilitate the issues. You are expected to present the findings through a comprehensive individual presentation with explanatory notes.
The online retail store is selling clothing products for males and females. The store facing challenges in managing and analysing large volumes of data from different sources including customers, products, orders generation and employees. Consider the following use case:
- Customer registration
- Product management
- Order management
- Employee management
You are expected to complete the following tasks:
Task 1 (LO1, LO2):
- Develop the current situation analysis based on technological advancement and how data can be used to shape strategies for the online retail store.
- Critically investigate the technological advancement available based on Relational database management system (RDBMS) for data storage options for the online store.
Task 2 (LO3):
- Apply the relational database theory, normalization, and data modelling techniques to design a data model for the online store.
- Implement the model using SQL, including creating tables, inserting data, and querying the database.
- Design an ER diagram with the appropriate relationships and cardinality.
- Develop the required SQL scripts and the database for the ER diagram.
- Insert at least five records of your desired data in each database table. Ensure that you have a variety of user data, including cities (at least two different cities), genres, unit prices, products, orders and employees.
- Provide SQL scripts for:
- Customer registration
- Product management
- Order management
- Employee management
- Provide SQL statements for the following queries:
- Extract all the customers from a specific city.
- Count how many customers are from a specific city.
- Calculate the average of the unit price.
- Extract all current orders.
- Extract all payments with credit cards.
- Count how many employees handle male clothing order.
- Count the employees with the first name starting with the letter S (S capital).
Task 3 (LO4, LO5):
- Use the Gartner Hype Cycle (Data Management 2023) report and critically evaluate 2 different data processing technologies available to collect, clean, and transform the data as needed for analysis.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate tool (e.g. Power BI) to perform data analysis based on the data related to the use case.
- Provide examples of any 2 reports from the use case to demonstrate the data visualisation.
Organise your coursework in a PowerPoint presentation with explanatory notes according to the tasks and include slides with (a) the ER diagram, (b) the SQL scripts and (c) references to any sources used for this coursework (all in a single document). Present your work and submit the final document through Turnitin. Make sure you submit the final work (as word / pdf file) where explanatory notes should be clearly visible under each relevant slide.
Please refer to the marking criteria (below) for a breakdown of how the tasks will be marked.
