Assessment 1 - Presentation (group) - Worth: 30% This assessment has a staggered approach in that it has two components – 1) a group presentation worth 25% is presented face-to-face (F2F) in class, and 2) the remaining 5% is for individual students to post their questions and comments on the Discussion Board in the blackboard. These are explained in detail below. Due date: Commencing in Week 6 This is a team-based assignment that helps you develop a variety of skills, such as analytical and multi-perspective thinking on the go, interpersonal communication, and effective goal-oriented teamwork. Student teams (of diverse backgrounds) is to choose a case study/example (hint: you could choose a case involving a private-sector company OR a government OR a non-profit organisation) from the premier international business publications/magazines including (but not limited to) the Conversations, the BBC News, Times Asia, the ABC News, the Economist; the Wall Street Journal; the Guardian, the Age; Daily Telegraph, the Financial Times, The New York Times, The Australian, and similar other publications upon discussion with your class tutor, supplemented by news reports; newspaper articles and company websites for your selected case.

Student groups are required to discuss the three key questions:

  1. What have been the cultural and ethical challenges and implications in this particular case (use real-life company examples)?
  2. What would your group’s recommendations be in order to improve (or better handle) the issue(s)?
  3. Importantly, it is necessary for a student group to identify which Goal(s) their presentation is going to address under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Priority goals for this assessment are Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth; Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities; Goal 12:Responsible consumption and production; and Goal 16: Peace, justice, and strong institutions.

For this assessment, student groups are to analyse critically the challenges the global managers faced and the subsequent decisions they made in order to think about how to improve them and what recommendations your team would provide.

  3. discuss the responses (answers) to the case questions, the recommendations, and the theoretical contributions
  4. The expected length of the presentation for this assessment is a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes (around 20 slides).
