EDUC731 Research Methods 2023-2024 – Critical Essay (no more than 3,000 words)

This critical essay gives you the opportunity to show that you can critically evaluate two peer- reviewed journal papers using your knowledge of research methodology. You will be given two published papers to review. The papers will be provided in the Assessment Resources folder. When writing your assignment, keep in mind that the analysis of the papers should be in terms of the research philosophy and methodology and not in terms of the content (i.e., it is not important whether or not you agree with what they are saying). Keep your analysis concise and to-the point, using clear English.

Introduction (ca. 250 words)

Please provide an overview of what you will do in your critical essay. This section should provide the full references for the two papers that have been identified as the subject of your critical appraisal. Please use consistent formaṄng using either Harvard or APA7th style referencing.

Research Paradigms (ca. 500 words)

Please provide a short synthesis of the paper identifying the research paradigm of the research papers, commenting on ontology, epistemology, and methodology of the studies. Provide definitions of key terms. Substantiate your analysis by citing from the research methodology literature.

Critical Appraisal of Paper 1 (ca. 1,000 words

Provide a critical analysis of the methodology of the first paper. State clearly what the strengths and weaknesses of the paper are. Make sure you substantiate your analysis by referring to the research methodology literature.
