Advanced Research Practice - Literature Review
AI-ASSISTED IDEA GENERATION AND STRUCTURING
AI can be used in the assessment for brainstorming, creating structures, and generating ideas for improving work. It can be used to make improvements to the clarity or quality of student created work to improve the final output, but no new content can be created using AI. The final product must demonstrate individual understanding and effort.
AI can be used, but your original work with no AI content must be provided in an appendix.
- Literature reviews: AI tools can suggest potential topics (these should be logged on the template), highlight relevant recent publications, or organise search terms, but students must synthesise the research themselves.
- Essay outlines: AI can help generate a logical structure or key discussion points for an essay, but all writing must be original and authored by the student.
- You will be given a research area to by your supervisor.
- You are expected to explore the literature around this topic.
- The template should be filled out to show your engagement with the research.
- Section 1 Search Terms
- Section 2. Evaluation of the search results.
- Section 3. Summary of best evidence
- Section 4. Critical appraisal of the research paper.
- Section 5. Optional GenAI use
- Section 6. Literature Review
- A final 800-word summary, including the five most appropriate research articles, will then be generated by you using your original ideas and thoughts.
(You can use more references as appropriate).

Aim/Objective of the Study/Systematic Review:
What are the aims of the paper. This can be presented in the same style as the laboratory report for example.
Purpose of the Study: The study aims to develop a replicable cell culture methodology that enables the formation of Lewy body (LB)-like inclusions without genetic modifications or overexpression of alpha-synuclein (α-syn).
Main Aims:
1.To adapt the Encinas et al. (2000) protocol for generating neuron-like cells in a 2D cell culture format.
2.To maintain these neuron-like cells within a 3D matrix.
3.To induce the formation of nuclear-associated, ubiquitinated LB-like α-syn aggregates in these cells by treating them with preformed α-syn oligomers.

Experimental Design
How were the experiments performed in the research paper, if the paper is a review what was the focused topic area.
Outcomes Measured
What information has been produced by the work that is relevant to your research question? Consider the figures in the paper here and what they are showing. You can for example comment directly on a result.
Main Findings Relevant to Your Research Question
In your own words what is the key information or findings from the paper that will help inform your literature review.
Original Authors’ Conclusions
This should be a short summary of the paper outcomes. No more than four sentences. Paraphrase as required. Direct quotes should be added in “ “ with the journal add page number.
Critical Appraisal
Validity
Comment on the validity of the data in the paper. For example you can comment on
- Where appropriate controls used if so what were they
- have the correct statistical analysis been employed,
- was the biological / chemical model appropriate.
- Are the sample sizes appropriate.

Section 5 – Optional GenAI use log
GenAI is not required in this assessment. If you used an AI as one of your sources or to structure your work, please log that here.
Which AI did you use?
- Include a copy of your prompts here.
Comment on the quality, depth, and rigour of the output(s)
- Consider information – (is the text correct?)
- Bias in the information – (is there an alternative viewpoint?)
- Identify omission – (is all the information present?)
Detail how you have verified the output.
(try the prompt – “How can I verify the output you have given me”)
How have you used the output to help write your literature review?
Section 6 – Literature Review
GenAI is not required in this assessment. However AI can be used to improve the clarity or quality of your work or to improve the readability of the final output (for example, Grammarly / CoPilot), but GenAI cannot be used to create content. If you use a GenAI tool to help improve readability, please log that here.
- (Eg. Prompts created by Grammarly - "Identify any gaps" - "Give me ideas for improvement" - "Improve it")

COMBINED SUMMARY
[Best evidence appraised and key findings]
- 800 words (+/- 10%) intext citations are included in the word count.
- The five best sources of information are expected to be used to draw together the literature summary.
- Any additional papers extra to your five best sources should be added as a references list and will not contrubte towards the word out.
