Assignment Overview
The assignment will enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of good academic
practice, this includes academic conventions such as referencing, avoiding plagiarism, research skills,
academic writing skills.
This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your
achievement of the following module learning outcomes:
LO 1 Identify, search, and retrieve academic information relevant to business and management issues
LO 2 Demonstrate an ability to use effective and appropriate academic skills when exploring business
and management issues;
LO 3 Understand and implement good academic practice and know how to avoid academic malpractice
LO 4 Review academic resources in the field of business and management and synthesise them to
produce and present a literature review.
Assignment Task and Requirements
Identify and discuss core academic skills for student success in a Business and Tourism
Management Degree.
WHAT ARE YOU ASKED TO DO?
Prepare a 1500 Word essay that identifies four key academic skills which contribute to success in a
Business and Tourism Management Degree.
This task will require you to include all the following:
1. An explanation of why Higher Education Academic Skills are crucial for success.
2. Identification of a variety of academic skills.
3. A discussion of how applying four specific academic skills can lead to success in Academic Writing.
4. Choose any four skills from the list below to base you essay on:
a) Research skills
b) Referencing skills
c) Proof Reading
d) Note Taking
e) Planning
f) Structure and Academic Tone
g) Time Management
h) Paraphrasing
Important:
All of your work must be based on reliable research and have a minimum of 10 different sources
within it. Please ensure you use both direct and indirect citations.
Assignment Guide and Format
Your essay needs to include the following:
1. Introductory paragraph (150 Words) – use a citation to define academic skills and a second
resource to explain why they are important and can lead to academic success.
2. The main body paragraphs (1200 Words) must include:
a) An identification of a range of academic skills, taken from research such as the core textbooks.
b) Choose four of the skills listed in part A to focus your essay on.
c) Discuss each of the academic skills you have chosen, including a detailed description and an
explanation of how developing this skill further can positively impact academic writing. All
information must be drawn from research including the core texts. Remember a discussion is
using a variety of different views to explain the point you are making in the paragraph.
For each of the four skills you choose you would need to write approximately 300 words.
3. Conclusive Paragraph (150 Words) – this paragraph needs to summarise the topic of the essay.
Do not introduce new ideas into this section, only summarise.

You must reference all sources used in your work, using the Harvard Referencing Guide from
CCCU.

Referencing and research requirements
Please reference your work according to the Canterbury Harvard Referencing style guidance. You can
access this on Moodle.
For each reference used, provide the full Harvard reference within your references section and the core in-
text citation if you are referencing something in your text.
Include both direct and indirect citations from a wide variety of sources.
How your work will be assessed
Your work will be assessed on the extent to which it demonstrates your achievement of the stated learning
outcomes for this assignment (see above) and against other key criteria, as defined in the University’s
institutional grading descriptors. If it is appropriate to the format of your assignment and your subject area,
a proportion of your marks will also depend upon your use of academic referencing conventions.
This assignment will be marked according to the grading descriptors for Level 0.
Submission details
This assignment should be submitted electronically via Moodle (module tutors will discuss this process
with you during class time).
 Please ensure that your work has been saved in an appropriate file format (Microsoft Word, Excel
or PowerPoint, or PDF are the most widely used; Google Docs is also accepted). Your file must
also contain at least 20 words of text, consist of fewer than 400 pages and be less than 40MB in
size.

your work more than once, your earlier submission will be replaced by the most recent version.
