The Assessment Process and Your Rights
|
Assessment Submission Guidelines
All assessments must be submitted by the due date specified by the Trainer/Assessor on the UIT Learning Management System (Moodle). To log in to UIT Moodle visit https://uit.learnbook.com.au
When submitting assessments students agree that it is their own work, except where acknowledged, and has not been submitted for academic credit elsewhere.
If you miss an Assessment Deadline:
If you miss a scheduled assessment you are required to provide proof of legitimate absence within three (3) working days after the official due date.
Proof must be provided to the Student Services Department and may be required to complete an assessment extension application form.
If the proof is not provided within the time period, then the student will receive a ‘Not Yet Competent (NYC)’ outcome.
No supplementary assessments will be scheduled without proof of legitimate absence.
If the proof of legitimate absence is rejected, the student can appeal to the VET Academic department.
For more information, please refer to the student handbook.
Re-submission
Students are permitted 2 attempts for each assessment task.If you are deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC) for the unit, you must re-enrol and pay the required tuition fees for the unit.
Assessment Task and Unit Outcome
All individual assessment tasks are marked as either Satisfactory (S) or Not Satisfactory (NS).
Once all individual assessment tasks are marked Satisfactory (S) for a unit, the student can be deemed Competent (C).
If the student does not achieve Satisfactory (S) results for all individual assessment tasks for a unit, they will be deemed Not Yet Competent (NYC).
Reasonable Adjustment
At the Trainer/Assessors discretion reasonable adjustment, also known as reasonable accommodation, may be applied. This means that `reasonable` adjustments may be made wherever possible; to meet the needs of a student with disability or with other learning needs. If you require more details about reasonable adjustment, please refer to the student handbook.
Learning support
If you require further assistance in your learning, UIT encourages you to reach out to your Trainer to discuss the areas that you believe you need further assistance with. If you require further support after consulting your trainer, please see a Student Services Officer who can arrange a time to discuss your concerns with the VET Academic department.

Feedback to student
Feedback on students’ assessment performance is a vital element in their learning. Its purpose is to justify to students how their competency was assessed, as well as to identify and reward specific qualities in their work, to recommend aspects needing improvement, and to guide students on what steps to take.
Feedback defines for students what their trainer/assessor thinks is important for a topic or a subject. At its best, feedback should:
Be provided for each Unit Assessment Task (UAT)
Guide students to adapt and adjust their learning strategies
Guide trainers/assessors to adapt and adjust teaching to accommodate students’ learning needs
Be a pivotal feature of learning and assessment design, not an add-on ritual
Focus on course and unit learning outcomes
Guide students to become independent and self-reflective learners and their own critics
Acknowledge the developmental nature of learning
If students have not received proper feedback, they must speak to VET department/administration department in UIT/person responsible for looking after the VET department/administration of UIT.
Information about Assessment
|
Dimensions of Competency
To be competent, you must show your ability to perform effectively in a broad capacity. The dimensions of competency ensure the person being assessed has the skills to perform competently in a variety of different circumstances. To be competent, you must demonstrate the following:
- Task Skills: The skills needed to perform a task at an acceptable level. They include knowledge and practical skills, and these are usually described in the performance criteria.
- Task Management Skills: These are skills in organising and coordinating, which are needed to be able to work competently while managing a number of tasks or activities within a job.
- Contingency Skills:The skills needed to respond and react appropriately to unexpected problems, changes in routine and breakdowns while also performing competently.
- Job Role/Environment Skills: The skills needed to perform as expected in a particular job, position, location and with others. These skills may be described in the range of variables and underpinning skills and knowledge.
Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence
Assessment must be conducted in accordance with the rules of evidence and principles of assessment. The following definitions of these terms are taken from the Australian Skills Quality Authority’s Users’ guide: standards for registered training organisations (RTOs) 2015.
Principles of Assessment
Validity: ‘Any assessment decision of the RTO is justified, based on the evidence of performance of the individual learner. Validity requires:
- assessment against the unit(s) of competency and the associated assessment requirements covers the broad range of skills and knowledge that are essential to competent performance
- assessment of knowledge and skills is integrated with their practical application
- assessment to be based on evidence that demonstrates that a learner could demonstrate these skills and knowledge in other similar situations
- judgement of competence is based on evidence of learner performance that is aligned to the unit/s of competency and associated assessment requirements.’
Reliability: ‘Evidence presented for assessment is consistently interpreted and assessment results are comparable irrespective of the assessor conducting the assessment.’
Flexibility: ‘Assessment is flexible to the individual learner by:
- reflecting the learner’s needs
- and assessing competencies held by the learner no matter how or where they have been acquired
- drawing from a range of assessment methods and using those that are appropriate to the context, the unit of competency and associated assessment requirements, and the individual.’
Fairness: ‘The individual learner’s needs are considered in the assessment process. Where appropriate, reasonable adjustments are applied by the RTO to take into account the individual learner’s needs. The RTO informs the learner about the assessment process and provides the learner with the opportunity to challenge the result of the assessment and be reassessed if necessary.’
Rules of Evidence
- Validity: ‘The assessor is assured that the learner has the skills, knowledge and attributes as described in the module or unit of competency and associated assessment requirements.’
- Sufficiency: ‘The assessor is assured that the quality, quantity and relevance of the assessment evidence enables a judgement to be made of a learner’s competency.’
- Currency: ‘The assessor is assured that the assessment evidence demonstrates current competency. This requires the assessment evidence to be from the present or the very recent past.’
- Authenticity: ‘The assessor is assured that the evidence presented for assessment is the learner’s work.`
Glossary of Instructional Task Words
The assessment tasks use a range of instructional words, such as ‘compare’ and ‘list’. These terms will guide the student and yourself regarding the level of detail that must be provided in students’ answers. Some questions will also tell you how many answers students need to give – for example, ‘Describe three strategies…’. Use the following glossary to guide you in interpreting the words in the tasks:
- Analyse – This means you should break an issue down into its parts, identify them and explain how they relate. You should discuss the issue in detail and methodically.
- Compare – This means you should describe the similarities or differences between two or more things, ensuring you also discuss the relevance of the differences. You may also be asked to ‘contrast’, as in ‘compare and contrast’, which means you are also focusing on the dissimilarity.
- Define – This means you should explain the meaning or interpretation of a term or concept in your own words, including any qualities which are essential to understanding.
- Describe – This means you should outline the most noticeable qualities or features of an idea, topic or the focus of the question.
- Discuss – This means you must point out the important issues or features, key points, and possible interpretations, and debate through argument. You should provide reasons for and against it.
- Evaluate – This means you must judge or calculate the quality, importance, amount, or value of something. You must provide an in-depth answer with as much detail as possible.
- Examine – This means you must look at, or consider, the item or subject carefully and in detail to discover something about it. You will need to provide a detailed response with key points and features. You should provide a response with as much detail as possible, but a minimum of one or two paragraphs in length. Examine is similar to analysis.
- Explain – This means you need to make something clear or show your understanding by describing it or providing information about it. You will need to make clear how or why something happened or something is the way it is.
- Identify – You must recognise something and indicate what the required information is. The length of the answer should be guided by what you are being asked to identify.
- List – You must record short pieces of information in a numbered or bulleted form with one or two words or sentences on each line.
- Outline – You must give a brief description of the main facts or sequence of events about something. The length of the response should be guided by what you are required to outline. As long as you include the main facts or points, then that’s enough.
- Summarise – You must express the most important facts or points about something in short and concise form.
The following outlines the assessment requirements for this unit. You are required to complete all assessment requirements outlined below to achieve competency for this unit.
Your assessor will provide you with the due dates for each assessment task. Write them in the table below.

You must complete all parts of the task outlined below.
|
Part A: Review Project Requirements and Email Briefing Report to CBSA MD
|
To begin this part, read the following email and then complete the tasks that follow:
In this part, you will complete the following three actions:
a) Review the email below to obtain instructions from your Managing Director.
d) Read the attached Case Study about Eco-Natural Skin Care Australia’s needs for a website.
e) Read the Eco-Natural Skin Care’s Project Management Policy and Procedures.
f) Access the Briefing Report Template. Prepare a short Briefing Report for the CBSA Managing Director, outlining the purpose of the briefing report, proposed quality objectives and proposed quality standards. Identify at least ten relevant quality standards for this project.
Case Study – Eco-Natural Skin Care
Eco-Natural Skin Care is an Australian company with a head office based in Brisbane. The company commenced business in 1996 and manufactures and eco-friendly, high-quality beauty skincare products. The business was established to cater to the growing demand for skin products that contain eco-friendly and natural ingredients. There is also an emphasis on eco-friendly packaging.
The company sells its products in health food shops across the country, as well as on-line through its own web site. The company targets customers that want high quality, eco-friendly products. Market research has identified that around 70% of customers are professional women aged 25 to 55.
Most customers are health conscious, care about protecting the environment and have an average annual income of $80,000.
The company currently has a small range of products that include:
- Cleansing creams to soothe skin during make-up removal. Primary ingredients include Shea butter to nourish the skin and plant extracts that are also rich in essential oils with regenerating and anti-inflammatory properties. This product will be for delicate and mature skin and could also be used as a baby cream.
- Multi-Protection Day Moisturizing Creams for dry to normal skin types that help protect the skin during the day and include Shea butter and extracts from fragile green algae that provide hydrating and protective properties.
- Regenerating facial scrub to clean off dead skin cells to promote the regeneration of healthy new cells. This product will be used for most skin types.
Within the last seven months, CBSA assisted Eco-Natural Skin Care Australia in opening a Retail Store in both Sydney and Melbourne. The project was a success, and the company achieved an increase in market share of 20% within the first six months.
The company’s overall business objectives for the next three years are to increase sales by 40% and create brand awareness, develop a broader product range, as well as expand into overseas markets, most likely Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.
The company also wants to achieve an online presence, offering online shopping to customers but will need to research this further to understand the resources required to staff calls, online queries, packaging and postal services required.
To increase sustainability, which its customers are interested in, Eco-Natural Skin Care wants to offer discounts to customers who bring in product bottles and jars to be refilled instead of throwing away each empty container.
The company currently employs the following staff:
- Head Office: CEO, Managing Director, HR Manager, Operations Manager, Marketing Coordinator, Customer Service Officer and two administration staff.
- Ten staff are employed in the factory, making and distributing the products.
- Three Retail Store Managers – one in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
- Six full-time staff – two at each store and six part-time staff – two at each store.
To date, the company has been utilising a basic website, that includes four pages: Home, About Us, Products and Contact Details. The company has decided to replace it completely.
The new website is seen as a critical part of Eco-Natural Skin Care’s expansion strategy. The company wants to address Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) for vision-impaired users.
The Eco-Natural Skin Care CEO has provided a strict budget of $21,000 for this project, with no variances allowable. The budget is based on their estimated costs.
A key aim of the project is that customers are attracted to the website and find it easy to use.
Timing is also an issue, as the website should be ready by October to be ready for the Christmas season: (assume that it is currently June).
