Assessment Task
You will work in a group of 4-5 students to create an Analysis Workbook that will be used in both Part A and B of Assessment 2. As a team member, you are required to initiate, plan and document steps involved in a data analytics and visualization case study. For Part A, you will use a business analytics tool to review data and prepare an Analysis Workbook.
Please refer to the Instructions section below for details on how to complete this task
Context
By analyzing data, businesses evaluate their performance and make informed decisions. Data reporting is the most important step of this process since it helps them keep track of the various steps taken including collecting, merging, cleaning, analyzing and visualizing business data. In the context of this assessment task, you are introduced to data analysis and reporting practices using an industry-based tool to produce a meaningful and insightful business report. You will extend your knowledge gained while completing Assessment Task 1, working on a similar dataset, but this time using Tableau. While completing Assessment Task 2 Part A, you will develop skills in working as a team to select and review an industry-related public data set. You will also demonstrate the ability to explore, describe, clean, and analyze the dataset, identify key information and concepts within the scenario, and develop an Analysis Workbook.
LO1:Explore data analytics and visualization techniques, and industry-leading business analytics tools in an organizational context.
Instructions
In preparation for Assessment Task 2 Part A, you will review the following modules:
- Module 2 on data exploration.
- Module 3 on the types of questions a data analyst should ask and a storytelling approach.
- Module 4.1 on using Tableau to analyze a dataset.
To complete this assessment task successfully, you must complete the following seven tasks: Task 1: Form and register a team
- Form a team of 4-5 students. Send a registration email to the Learning Facilitator before the registration deadline. Note: the deadline for team registration is 11:45 pm AEST Friday end of Module 3.1.
- The registration email must be sent by a team member with the subject line “[MIS304] Team Registration”. In the body of that email, please list all the team members’ names and student ID numbers.
- After the registration deadline, those students who are not in a team will be allocated to teams by the Learning Facilitator.
- Please refer to the Assessment 2 Group Formation Guidelines in the Assessment Section on Blackboard for more information.
Task 2: Read the Group Contract
Please read the attached MIS304 Assessment 2 Group Contract. This document outlines the rules and conditions each group must follow for all parts of Assessment task 2 as well as the roles and responsibilities of each group member. Each group is required to complete the group contract and include it as an appendix to Assessment 2 Part A (Analysis Workbook). One person representing the team will submit the signed group contract as part of the Analysis Workbook. The group contract accounts for 10% of the assessment task grade, as indicated in the Assessment Rubric.
For assessment tasks where students are expected to work in groups, the workload must be shared equitably among all group members. Please refer to sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Student Conduct Policy.
When submitting the group contract, you are reminded not to ‘recycle’ (self-plagiarise) contracts from other assessment tasks. Sections on deliverables, timelines and expectations should be unique to each part of the assessment task. Self-plagiarism constitutes a breach of Academic Integrity and can lead to penalties applied to the assessment task or the subject.
For Assessment 2 Parts A-C, you should keep records of communication and drafts. Any serious concerns about an individual group member’s contribution should be brought to the attention of your Learning Facilitator as soon as they occur or at least two weeks before the assessment task due date, whichever is earlier. Teams may also be required to produce these records as evidence of group members’ contributions.
If a student has been accused of not contributing equally or fairly to a group assessment task, the student will be contacted by the Learning Facilitator and given three working days to respond to the allegation and provide supporting evidence. If there is no response within three working days of contact, the Learning Facilitator will determine an appropriate mark based on the evidence available. This may differ from the mark awarded to other group members and will reflect the individual student’s contribution in terms of the quantity and quality of work.
Apply data visualisation techniques using analytics tool to an industry-based case study.
Task 3: Choose a public dataset
The team members will assume business analyst roles where they will perform an analysis of an industry-based dataset. The team will follow these steps:
- Find a suitable public dataset that is different to assessment 1 for this assessment task.
- The learning facilitator will guide you to find suitable databases and websites.
- The learning facilitator needs to approve the selected dataset before the team moves to task 4 below.
Task 4: Connect the dataset to Tableau
- Connect the chosen dataset to Tableau software.
- In Module 3, you will be taught how to use Tableau and how to connect various data sources to the Tableau platform.
Task 5: Explore and review dataset
- Use the tools and options within Tableau to explore the data and obtain an overview of the dataset.
- Complete the following steps:
- Carefully review the quality of the raw data.
- Clean the data if necessary.
- Check for errors, missing values, or outliers.
- Confirm the validity of the data.
Task 6: Prepare an Analysis Workbook
- Start preparing the Analysis Workbook in Microsoft Word. You must include the following sections:
- Table of contents.
- Summary.
- Introduction.
- An overview of the dataset including a link to the dataset.
- Rationale for your choice of this dataset.
Data review and the cleaning process (outcomes from Task 5 above).
Data analysis/visualisation plan (see task 7).
An appendix including screenshots of Tableau charts and the group contract (see Task 2).
You should use a storytelling approach (refer to module 3.2). You can seek additional guidance from the Learning Facilitator.
Task 7: Create a data analysis and visualisation plan
- In this section of the Analysis Workbook, create a detailed plan for both analysing the data and creating visualisation charts.
- Explore the data and brainstorm from a business analyst perspective with your group members on the following topics:
- How well can the dataset be investigated?
- What questions can be answered?
- What aims and objectives can be set?
Please note: a Business Analyst’s approach will always be to make the best use of data in order to understand the underlying business performance and to enable future decisions.
- Document your plan in detail. You must include aims, objectives, at least 5 investigative questions, and expected outcomes.
- Note: This section will be followed by a detailed reporting section that you will do as part of Assessment task 2 Part B.
Ensure that your Analysis Workbook is produced to a professional standard, and includes all requirements and content sequenced according to the guidelines provided in Task 6 above. Use font Arial or Calibri 11-point, line-spacing at 1.5, and page numbers in the footer. Please reference using APA style guidelines.
The completed Analysis Workbook will be submitted as a Word (.doc) file for Assessment Task 2 Part A.
Referencing
You must use the appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research. Please see more information on referencing on the Academic Skills webpage.
